One Year In: What I’ve Noticed About How People Shop in State College

Now that we’re coming up on a year at Town Pride State College, I’ve found myself paying more attention to the little things. Especially how people shop.

One of the things I didn’t expect when I opened a shop in downtown State College is how differently everyone shops.

Some people walk in and go straight to what they came for. Others won’t even touch anything at first. They’ll take a lap, sometimes two, just kind of getting a feel for the store before they decide what they like.

And then there are the people who didn’t plan to come in at all. They’re already out shopping downtown, see the store, and pop in for a minute. Those are usually the ones who end up staying the longest.

Being on Calder Way, we see a little bit of everything. Students between classes, parents visiting campus, locals who are already out and about. Some weekends are busier because of games or other things going on, but even on a random day there’s a steady flow of people coming through.

What’s interesting to me isn’t what people say they’re looking for. It’s what they actually end up choosing.

Most of the time, it’s not the loudest thing in the shop. It’s something they can see themselves wearing. A sweatshirt that feels easy. A hat they know they’ll grab without thinking. Something that just fits into their life.

You can usually tell when someone finds it. They pause for a second. Maybe hold onto it a little longer than everything else they picked up.

That’s usually when the decision’s already been made.

Sometimes it’s someone who lives here and just wants something that represents State College in a simple way. Other times it’s someone visiting who wants something to remember the trip. A game weekend, a walk through campus, or just being downtown for a few hours.

Different reasons, but it kind of ends in the same place.

Looking back on this first year, that’s probably the biggest thing I’ve learned. Not just what people buy, but why they choose it.

And it’s almost always something simple. Something they’ll actually wear. Something that reminds them of why they like being here in the first place.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not really about what someone bought that afternoon. It's the joy the find in it.
