You Don’t Have to Shop Small All the Time

You Don’t Have to Shop Small All the Time

A few months ago, I posted a reel that I almost didn’t share.

It was simple. Just a thought that had been sitting with me for a while:

You don’t have to shop small all the time to support small businesses.

I didn’t think much of it. It wasn’t a promotion. It wasn’t tied to anything we were selling. It just felt honest.

What surprised me was how many people responded.

Not in a big, viral way. Just quietly. Messages, comments, conversations in the store. People saying some version of the same thing:

“I needed to hear that.”

I think there’s this pressure sometimes, especially if you like supporting local, that it has to be all or nothing.

Shop small or you’re not doing enough.
Shop local or you’re doing it wrong.

But that’s not how people actually shop.

Honestly, it’s not even how I shop.

From behind the counter, I see it every day.

Someone might come in looking for a gift and leave with something for themselves. Someone else is in town for a game weekend and just wants something that feels like where they’ve been. And a lot of people are picking up one piece that fits into everything else they already own.

None of that replaces how they shop everywhere else. And it’s not supposed to.

Most people don’t live in extremes.

They shop where it’s convenient. They shop where it’s practical. And sometimes they shop somewhere that just feels good.

That’s where small businesses live.

Not in competition with everything else. Just alongside it.

From a store perspective, that actually makes a lot of sense.

I’m not trying to replace everything you buy. I’m not expecting to be your only stop.

What matters more is that when you do come in, you find something you like. Something you actually use or enjoy. Something that sticks around longer than the moment you bought it.

That’s enough.

If anything, that reel reminded me of this:

People want to support small businesses. They just want to do it in a way that feels natural, not forced.

And honestly, that’s probably when it matters most.

You don’t have to shop small all the time.

But when you do, it counts.
